Dampen the area with water and blot gently with a clean cloth to remove as much of the ashes as possible. Blot the soot stain with a solution of one tablespoon of washing up liquid and two cups of cold water with a clean white cloth. The first thing to do is to remove as much ash as possible. Vacuum up the soot and mess with a powerful vacuum once the absorbent has set. Blot remaining soot stains with baking soda and water or white vinegar. If soot has gotten on your carpet try sprinkling the area with baking soda which will soak up some of it. There are soap additives that can be used as well for additional cleaning power. Your clothes and carpet should now be soot free. Brush away loose soot first. Using a clean white cloth sponge the stain with a dry cleaning.

Sprinkle baking soda cornstarch or other absorbent on the stain. You can successfully clean ash stained carpet by acting immediately after the stain occurs. Sponge the area with cold water and dry with a clean colourfast towel. These dry cleaning solutions should go on a white cloth because the chemicals in the absorbent could bleach the cloth.

Use fireplace vacuum or ash vacuum instead for a lesser chance of spreading the ash. Test your method on a small area first to prevent damage. Next use a clean white cloth soaked in dry cleaning solution hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol to lift the remaining soot stain. Use a vacuum hose in areas along the baseboards for a better reach.
